Participation in CC activities 

From Individual Perspective

Target:  

  • All can speak CC at different levels

  • Parental Generation

Objective:
Understand to what extent CC culture and language are sustained 
through:

  • Chiu Chow activities - the Chiu Chow community in HK

  • Family level - pass-on value of Chiu Chow language / culture

Most of them learnt CC first​

Their CC competence is deteriorating 

There is a language shift from CC to Cantonese, the most dominant language in HK

The participation rate in the CC activities is low. 

Reason for inactive participation is due to the lack of information and lack of interest in the activities.

For those who have participated, it is suggested that they have a sense of belonging to CC and it is their habit to join the activities. 

The most popular activity is Yu Lan Festival and CC opera. Some respondents suggest these are their childhood memory.

A lady in her middle age states that there is hardly an occasion using Chiuchownese. She suggests that in her daily life, she goes to market speaking Cantonese and back home using Cantonese with her children.

A man says his Chiuchownese is deteriorating and he is only able to practice it during Chiu Chow opera.

A lady over 60 years old indicates that they speak Chiuchownese among their family members. There is no problem of passing on the Chiu Chow language.
